Well great now I have to try and make friends
My friends and I just farmed wrathborn hunts. There is currently a bug where if the person who started the hunt doesn't deal any damage at all to the boss, the lure charge won't be consumed while still giving essence when completed. I believe tier 2 hunts give more essence but I'm not entirely sure about that
I'm a solo player with no friends and in my opinion the best way to get essence of dawning (as a solo player) is to do strikes (I don't know if you can select lake of shadows and still get lure charge progress) like lake of shadows that you can get done in at most 5 minutes which give you 8-9 essence each then after you charge 5 lures do those wrathborn hunts which will give you 14-15 essence each and repeat until you have enough essence. But if you do have a friend go into a wrathborn hunt and kill the boss but make sure that the person that starts it doesn't do any damage to the boss and it won't use the charge but both of you will still get the rewards.

What is fastest way for essence in pve if you have everything but beyond light?
Lake of shadows is good for essence if you dont want to/cant do 1250 lost sectors or dont want to do gambit (understandable)
