Destiny 2 – The Science Behind Stasis

Stasis is an interesting topic that pulls from multiple areas of physics, most notably the concept of Entropy. It is the control and reversal of entropy, which cools its target to absolute zero, all the way to zero entropy, causing the atoms to rearrange into crystals.

Huge thanks to u/LettuceDifferent5014 for letting me use his post, and for speaking with me at length about his theories. It all helped a lot, man!

A couple notes/clarifications:

1. Obviously a system of 4 quarters wouldn’t spontaneously flip themselves over time (thus obeying the 2nd law). Instead, what would probably happen is that the atoms within would decay (over billions of years), and the entropy would increase in that way. But really the quarter system is just an analogue to a more ‘realistic’ system of dipoles. They share basically the same statistics, but it’s a lot easier to talk about quarters than dipoles.

2. It is possible that we sometimes create imperfect crystals, since we have no way of knowing whether or not there is residual entropy in the targets we hit. It’s possible that there still exist some defects.

  1. There is a mistake in this video (at least one. lol). I'll pin the comment of the first person that finds it.

Edit: Also, drinking game idea. In part 3, take a shot every time I say the word perfect, or a word containing perfect.

  2. I never imagined I would learn so much from the Destiny community, let alone in the fundamental forces of our universe. Mero, thanks for making my experience in Destiny that much more fascinating and badass
