We start the next Destiny 2 campaign by watching a cutscene narrated by an unknown individual. Her future does not begin here, but ours does. It is time to step beyond the Light.

The real story starts as we witness a lone Fallen vandal traversing the frozen tundra. He arrives at a building and sends out an emergency signal warning us about how we are all in danger, and how his kind needs help. At the same time, some exo hunter sneaks in and manages to acquire some sort of fragment from inside the building. The fallen vandal realizes that something is wrong, but the more important threat has arrived outside the building.

This is where we finally come in. Ever since the appearance of the pyramids, we have been sent all over the system scanning them. This one, like the rest, all turns up empty. Our ghost laments how we’re so powerless every time we face the darkness, and I don’t really share the same sentiment. The more urgent matter at hand, though, is that our ghost picks up a distress signal. He recognizes the voice as belonging to Varik’s, the previous warden of elders and it is conveniently coming from here in Europa.

From what I understand, Variks abandoning his post is what lead to the riot at the Prison of Elders. That was where Uldren under the influence of Riven killed Cayde. Having our first mission be one where we rescue an individual that helped usher in the death of the Hunter Vanguard is an interesting start. This character directly ties in with previous events of the story and has us rescuing an ally. The events and themes of Beyond Light all tie in with us obtaining and using aspects of the darkness, a force we once deemed evil. Us starting of by rescuing such an individual we are uneasy with helps in adding tension to an otherwise standard mission. It also helps introduce the themes of the campaign in a more subtle manner. There is a new threat among us, and in order to make progress, we have to move past what we already know and head into the unknown.

Europa as a location is quite visually stunning, no surpises there. The skybox with Jupiter looming in the background along with the flashes of orange in the distance make for a nice contrast against the otherwise barren snow.

As we make our way forward, we witness the pyramid of darkness in the distance as some enemy ships make their presence known.

Some Fallen are attacking the campgrounds where we previously saw Variks. According to our ghost, they donned an unknown House symbol, an interesting development. Variks is also not inside. It appears as if we were too late. Ghost scans the room. The main reason for this outside of the narrative is to introduce the Braytech faction to the guardian. They once experienced a Golden Age, and this location on Europa was one of their colonies. There’s nothing more for us to gather at this location, and thus we continue on. We are attacked by some more Fallen along the way, by they are of no problem.

  1. I'm probably not awake if your reading this when this video has been scheduled to release since I'm getting a good night's rest before The Final Shape. Speaking of, I will be streaming it on my channel when it comes out. Shocker, I know. I plan on playing the campaign on Legendary Solo in order to get the full experience. Then, I'll try to get prepped for the raid just for the fun of it.

Here is the community post explaining what I've been up to: https://www.youtube.com/post/UgkxgNQJyFN1fu7l1InMalOSukCJgDG96Hpm

Hope to see you on stream. Cheers!

  2. Yeah i was pretty disappointed with beyond light even more so with the build up of Arrivals it was building up to be a Black fleet story or something but ended up being a Fallen one, i'm convinced it was hit by the lockdowns

  3. The thing about Variks mechanical arms is a cultural thing of the Fallen race
They decide your role in the fallen hierarchy
variks arms was removed before by his former leader bc he did something silly ( i don't remeber 💀)
Then he was exilade and got these arms, eramis doing that is like a punishment for a heavy crime
