After two extra months in the oven, Beyond Light is here. I’ve logged probably 30 or so hours in Beyond Light and probably about an equal amount writing this video. We have a lot to talk about: story, lore, Stasis, weapon sunsetting, New Light 2.0 and some really bad community takes. We’ll close it out with some overall thoughts. I have extended thoughts here in the description as well, scroll down for more.

Merch Callout – 0:00
Story/Lore – 1:48
Stasis – 6:52
Gameplay loop & Leveling – 9:58
Weapon Sunsetting – 12:51
New Light 2.0 – 18:46
Community Thoughts – 19:32
Closing Thoughts – 21:12

Beyond Light met my expectations for what I expected of a typical Destiny release. Campaign, some post-campaign, cutscenes, yada yada. But, my expectations were quite tempered to most of the community’s. I think the community wanted more than just “more Destiny,” while that was exactly what I was expecting. The community maybe wanted more change or wanted things to feel different, even though Bungie didn’t really claim that things would change at all. They (and I) want the game to evolve, to grow not just in content, but in features and other developments, to not feel like we’re just in a holding pattern. And I’m not sure Beyond Light provided what people were hoping for, again, despite Bungie not making any claims that things would change. Sure, Stasis being a new subclass was an evolution of gameplay, but moment to moment gameplay in Destiny is some of the best in the industry already. Waiting all this time for Beyond Light to feel like “just” more Destiny maybe wasn’t enough for people.

There are also much more legitimate issues like weapon sunsetting and content removal that people are upset about, I don’t want to deny those claims either. While I think the content removal situation needed to happen for the health of the game, it is still a blow to the game itself. If there were a way to keep that content around, I’d be all for it, but it just didn’t seem like it was possible. Weapon sunsetting could’ve been executed upon a bit better to soften the damage that it would deal to our weapon collections.

I don’t think Destiny really got worse with Beyond Light or anything like that. I’m just not sure how much better it got. UI got better, lighting effects got better, load times got better, but those things are often overlooked and underappreciated because of much bigger issues that the day to day or week to week part of the game has. Destiny is not really a game built for the omega hardcore and it never really has been.

  1. Sorry about the audio glitch at 24:14, had a version of the video that didn't save a change I made and I thought it saved.

Also, I have some extended thoughts in the description if you'd like to read.

  2. While I was able to clear every boss fight on my own, I never hated destiny more then playing against these bosses.
Being one shot combo'd with any stasis move or to be frozen while jumping over a bottomless pit, the frustration was extreme.

  3. Yeah I don't have a raid team or fire team or any guild.. All my friends ditched after Leviathan raid thinking Destiny Lost it's soul. I agree to a point but I still enjoy the game a ton, but I turned to solo playing so I am hoping for some good content here

  4. I really liked the campaign, it wasn't braindead easy, it had us teaming up with Eliksni which I'm always a fan of, it actually has twists I didn't expect, and it gave ghost way more of a personality.

  5. Honestly I am so disappointed in myself thinking that Beyond Light would bring Destiny 2 back to being my main game again. Being someone who hasn't touched D2 for a whole year before Beyond Light due to feeling the game being the same stuff constantly expansion by expansion, season by season (ESPECIALLY season by season imo). Even more disappointed that I bought Beyond Light PLUS the season pass racking up $80 (cause Canada). To actually get into things, I enjoyed the story. Was nice finally getting the Exo Stranger back and the whole flow of getting our stasis powers. Not to mention the lore points that came (not too huge of a lore guy but nonetheless was nice). HOWEVER, Eramis was an absolutely laughable "villian" and honestly that aspect of the store was really boring. Like borderline falling asleep boring. Now I have had a running joke in D2 for its story simplicity (I.e. Eramis just being an stasis strike boss, the story going from spheres=good, triangles=bad) but this expansion really pointed those jokes out. Not a bad per say but makes it really easy to define this expansion. But sadly the end of the story makes the rest of the expansion seem lifeless. The loss of multiple planets and sunsetting set a really high expectation to get something of at least equal or maybe a little less in return. This, is not the case. Sadly there isn't enough both change and content for D2 to come back as my main game. Heck even a game I might return to infrequently. Same goes for the new season sadly. With the entire gameplay loop coming back to "do the core Playlist which haven't been updated or had new content in years" to get gear that is hardly a comparison to what we lost with weapon sunsetting, I have no motivation or drive to play any of it. Truthfully, beyond some good sides of the story and better than usual campaign missions, Beyond Light and Season of the Hunt are repeats of what we have had for years and I think Bungie really needs to step up and put the same amount of effort they are now on pushing good story to pushing good unique content. All in all, man do I wish I could get a refund for this expansion and season.

  7. I just want my fucking guns back. I had so many guns I just enjoyed using, I get the pinnacle weapons but I'd take a nerf just to use my lunas, or my service revolver, or my austringer. I dont get what they were thinking, they took 80 percent of the enjoyable guns

  9. Bungie should have never left Activision, period. If Bungie has said they will never be ablet o make a Forsaken sized expansion ever again because Activision isn't helping them, they need to go back to Activision. They never will, so there will never be an expansion as good as Forsaken. The game is officially dying, but they'll drag this fucking shit out for years.

  10. And no, bungie is pretty fucking lazy with things, and have been for a while. Balancing, loot pooling, refreshing weapons, but they'll sure as fuck put effort in for Eververse. Bungie can only make Destiny as big as a car, but they're trying to upsell it like a truck, which they can't do. It's a console game at the end of the day beceause the amount of content we get is 100% tied to consoles, so whatever.

  12. here's another take for you: how about Bungie stops pushing out weak content, and take longer to make something worth playing

I am just DONE with all this back and fourth.
I have never spent so much money on a game series, yet it still feels like A BETA. (hope it gets better, etc etc)
    So sad.

  14. The whole Comment, ( I dont have friends but I want to play Destiny intro) . I did not find that at all important in the points you where making. I have friends, but as I'm a female and alot of my friends will never touch a shooting game, why should I not be able to play Destiny. What I do think the game needs is more back ground, my Character is an Exo, where basically fighting Clovis Bray and learning his back ground. How about my Characters background, not to mention kayde, who probably like my character may have been assembled , changed or Built at Clovis Bray, how about some recognition of my character being an Exo. Like Variks said , his kind doesn't have to walk through the wreckage of our past lives, how about him saying to my Character, " Do you feel anything about being back in the place where my character or Kayde was created " . Just something to make your character feel they have some connection on Europa. Sorry about the long comment, but these background things are missing, so there doesn't seem to be any connection to Europa, only to destroy more Darkness. As for loot and strikes, this needs looking into, why should I do strikes and get gear , 6 or even 8 levels below what I already have, this makes Strikes in my eyes pointless. Great video

  15. TWENTY FIVE minutes for 'first' impressions?
Geez… how long are your 'in depth' impressions?

I bet you're one of those poopers who takes a series of magazines with you and takes so long your legs get numb from the knees down.

    (me too)

  16. i was constantly 20 – 30 levels below recommended light, but holy crap it made the game challenging, first boss I spent over an hour on, and you know what? I LOVED it.

  17. I really want to get more into destiny if bungie released solo-able raids. I dont like playing with others (due to poor experiences in the past) and would want to be able to do raids, since a lot of the armor and weapon pieces look really nice. Strikes are fine, since they're 1 and done kind a thing (solo strikes also would be nice, now that i think about it) but give us solo players opportunities to experience these cool challenges.
